How Natural are Organic Beauty Products?

The term ‘organic beauty’ is one that’s being used quite often in the advertising of beauty and cosmetics. The term organic beauty products seems to cover a wide range of products such as shampoo, moisturisers, make up and nail polish to mention a few. But what criteria does a product have to make to be considered ‘organic’?

Some brands advertise themselves as “the only true organic products on the market” – if that were true then wouldn’t other beauty manufacturers get in to trouble with trading standards?

The term ‘organic’ means that the products must be made from agriculturally raw materials that have not been fertilised or doused in pesticides, genetic engineering or any other form of non ‘natural’ treatment.

Some products, such as organic beauty products can’t be 100% organic as they would have no shelf life whatsoever, so is it perhaps fair to say that organic beauty products are more natural than other enhanced beauty products?

There are national minimum standards that products have to meet to be able to class themselves as organic, these standards are quite strict and although they may differ slightly from country to country but the fundamentals of the organic status requirements are pretty much the same.

 As owner of Organic Beauty Products, a blog relating to organic beauty products I spend a lot of time researching products and treatments from all over the globe. It is great to see that so many people are taking an interest in making beauty products as natural as possible. It’s difficult to break down a definition of ‘organic beauty products’ but in order to be classed as organic there must be at least 75% natural products leading to 95% in some classification in the UK. You have probably noticed that organic beauty products are often slightly more expensive than other cosmetic products on the shelves. Organic ingredients are more expensive than other products as it takes more to cultivate them and keep them as natural as possible.
