African Americans in particular embraced their automobiles because every aspect of travel in the era of Jim Crow was circumscribed by race and cars allowed them to avoid the segregation of the Jim Crow railroad car and bus. Buying a car also meant participating in consumer capitalism, the essence of American culture. African Americans expressed middle class American values through car ownership and cars helped to alter the way that people behaved toward one and to change deeply entrenched racial etiquette. Along the highways there was a close relationship between race and the organization of space. As black families and business travelers went out on the road, from the 1930s to the 1960s, they discovered a landscape of public establishments where they were unwelcome or even treated with hostility.;To help navigate the hostile roadside environment a variety of guidebooks assisted African Americans as they traveled in a country still in the throes of segregation. These travel guides provided state-by-state listings of public accommodations—hotels and motels, tourist houses, colored YMCAs, restaurants, movie theaters, doctors, barbershops and beauty parlors and various places of entertainment—that welcomed black patronage. The longest lasting and most successful of the African American travel guides was the Negro Motorist’s Green Book, published by Victor and Alma Green in their offices in Harlem. The Green Book appealed to middle class African Americans with its polite and restrained language. Ironically, middle class black travelers believed that travel would promote integration and defeat prejudice, but they were forced to stay in segregated accommodations when they traveled. The Green Book sustained itself for thirty years (1936-1966) by appealing to black middle class travelers and to white liberal supporters. ”Keep going”: African Americans on the road in the era of Jim Crow. $49.99 Americans loved their automobiles. African Americans in particular embraced their automobiles because every aspect of travel in the era of Jim Crow was circumscribed by race and cars allowed them to avoid the segregation of the Jim Crow railroad car and bus. Buying a car also meant participating in consumer capitalism, the essence of American culture. African Americans expressed middle class American values through car ownership and cars helped to alter the way that people behaved toward one and to change deeply entrenched racial etiquette. Along the highways there was a close relationship between race and the organization of space. As black families and business travelers went out on the road, from the 1930s to the 1960s, they discovered a landscape of public establishments where they were unwelcome or even treated with hostility.;To help navigate the hostile roadside environment a variety of guidebooks assisted African Americans as they traveled in a country still in the throes of segregation. These travel guides provided state-by-state listings of public accommodations—hotels and motels, tourist houses, colored YMCAs, restaurants, movie theaters, doctors, barbershops and beauty parlors and various places of entertainment—that welcomed black patronage. The longest lasting and most successful of the African American travel guides was the Negro Motorist’s Green Book, published by Victor and Alma Green in their offices in Harlem. The Green Book appealed to middle class African Americans with its polite and restrained language. Ironically, middle class black travelers believed that travel would promote integration and defeat prejudice, but they were forced to stay in segregated accommodations when they traveled. The Green Book sustained itself for thirty years (1936-1966) by appealing to black middle class travelers and to white liberal supporters. The story follows an unnamed narrator and his wife Ligeia, a beautiful and intelligent raven-haired woman. She falls ill, composes “The Conqueror Worm”, and quotes lines attributed to Joseph Glanvill (which suggest that life is sustainable only through willpower) shortly before dying. After her death, the narrator marries the Lady Rowena. Rowena becomes ill and she dies as well. The distraught narrator stays with her body overnight and watches as Rowena slowly comes back from the dead – though she has transformed into Ligeia. The story may be the narrator’s opium-induced hallucination and there is debate if the story was a satire. After the story’s first publication in The American Museum, it was heavily revised and reprinted throughout Poe’s life. The unnamed narrator describes the qualities of Ligeia, a beautiful, passionate and intellectual woman, raven-haired and dark-eyed, that he thinks he remembers meeting “in some large, old decaying city near the Rhine.” He is unable to recall anything about the history of Ligeia, including her family’s name, but remembers her beautiful appearance. Her beauty, however, is not conventional. He describes her as emaciated, with some “strangeness.” He describes her face in detail, from her “faultless” forehead to the “divine orbs” of her eyes. 3D SS President Coolidge – Vanuatu, South Pacific, Waterproof Dive Site Card $9.95 Launched in February of 1931, The SS President Coolidge was built by Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co in Newport News, Virginia USA. Prior to World War II, she was operated by the American President Lines as a luxury liner providing trans-pacific passage and commercial service. Passengers had a luxurious experience on the ship with spacious staterooms and lounges, private telephones, two saltwater swimming pools, a barbers shop, beauty salon, gymnasium and soda fountain. In 1941, as war time activitiesincreased, the US War Department began to use the President Coolidge for occasional voyages to Honolulu and Manila but it wasn’t until after the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 5, 1941 that she was fully commissioned as a transport ship for reinforcing garrisons in the Pacific. She was stripped of her finery, painted gun-metal grey and by early 1942; the SS President Coolidge had begun her days servicing the South West Pacific. As a troop carrier, she was never intended to see any action. In her first few months of service, her ports of call included Melbourne, Wellington, Auckland, Bora Bora, and Suva. On October 6, she set sail from her home port of San Francisco, California for New Caledonia and Espiritu Santo. On October 26, 1942, the SS Coolidge, fearing Japanese submarines and unaware of the mine fields, attempted to enter the harbor through the largest and most obvious channel, a friendly mine struck the ship at the engine room and moments later, a second mine hit her near the stern. The captain, knowing that he was going to lose the ship, ran her aground and ordered troops to abandon ship. Not believing the ship would sink, troops were told to leave all of their belongings behind under the impression that they would conduct salvage operationsover the next few days.
